DC:0-5™ is the Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood published by ZERO TO THREE. DC:0-5 is the revised and updated DC:0-3R and was created to provide developmentally specific, relationship based and contextually grounded diagnostic criteria and information about mental health disorders in infants and young children.
 
The DC:0-5™ Clinical Training Institute is designed for advanced practitioners such as mental health clinicians, psychiatrists, pediatricians, nurse practitioners and early interventionists who are responsible for diagnosis. Attendees will learn about the multi-axial approach to diagnosis, an approach which is developmentally informed, relationship-based, contextually and culturally grounded. The training allows clinicians to have in-depth knowledge of the approach and content of DC:0-5 and to practice application pf this nosology with the support of peers and certified ZTT trainers through activities and case examples.

Format

These clinical training institutes are available in extended-day (full-day session plus 2-hour evening session on same day), 2-day format or as a virtual training across 3 half-days.

Learning Objectives

  • Recite efforts to develop a diagnostic classification system for infancy/ early childhood.
  • Describe the risks and benefits of ascribing a clinical diagnosis in the 0-5 period
  • Explain the recommended approach for diagnosing disorders in infancy and early childhood.
  • Explain key changes in Axis I Clinical Disorders from DC:0-3R
  • Recite 4 examples of new disorders from several of the diagnostic categories in Axis I
  • Explain changes to Axis II Relational Context
  • Rate the adaptation of the key dyadic relationships of the infant/young child and rate the adaptation of the young child in relation to the caregiving (family) environment.
  • Use the Cultural Formulation for Use with Infants and Toddlers Table
  • Explain the new conceptualization of Axis V Developmental Competence and the use of the Developmental Milestones Table in Appendix A in the DC:0-5 Manual. 
  • Apply the DC:0-5 multiaxial system to classify clinical disorders in the 0-5 population
  • Explain the relationship between DC;0-5, DSM-5 and ICD-10 and recite the advantages and disadvantages of using a crosswalk across these systems

Target Audience

Master’s or doctoral-level professionals who are responsible for clinical diagnosis.
This training is designed for advanced practitioners including mental health clinicians, psychiatrists, pediatricians, nurse practitioners and early interventionists whose work with infants, young children and their families involves expert assessment, diagnosis, and case formulation. 

Training Cost

This training is provided by Right Start for Colorado with generous funding from SAMHSA and members of the Colorado Early Childhood Funders Network including Buell, Caring for Colorado, Community First, Piton and Zoma Foundations, thus it is offered no cost to participants.

CEUs

WellPower is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists and may be able to provide CEUs for the DC:0-5 Clinical Training Institutes. WellPower maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
